About Welcome to the Jungle
The opening track of Appetite for Destruction (1987). Guitar World's breakdown of Slash's rig for this song lists .010–.046 strings tuned to E♭ Standard, played on a Kris Derrig replica of a 1959 Les Paul through a rented Marshall. Izzy Stradlin's rhythm guitar and Duff McKagan's bass are tuned down a half step too.
TuneLit measured the song about 6 ¢ sharp on the Mobile Fidelity gold CD (UDCD 699), close to the album's 2 ¢, so it shares the album's setting: plain E♭ Standard at A 440. Either way the difference is below what most ears notice in a full band mix, and TuneLit's audio check hears the open low E♭ exactly where the tabs put it.
A popular Songsterr copy is rewritten for E Standard. With it you play a half step above the record, which becomes obvious the moment the band comes in.
Tip: If your tab is written for E Standard, keep its frets and tune every string down a half step, then check the low E♭ against the main riff.
Step by step
Tune your guitar like the record
- Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E♭ Standard, the notes Welcome to the Jungle was recorded in.
- From E Standard: Every string down a half step. No tuner that knows E♭ Standard? Clamp a capo across fret 1, tune to E Standard as usual, then take it off: every string drops to E♭ Standard. Check each string again afterwards, since a capo pulls the strings a little sharp.
- Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Welcome to the Jungle sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
- Then play Welcome to the Jungle along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.

Move the record into your tuning
Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move Welcome to the Jungle instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in E♭ Standard. Choose E Standard at A 440 and Welcome to the Jungle moves up 98 cents, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
