Standard tuning
Ukulele tuning
Standard ukulele tuning is re-entrant: String 4 is a high G4, above strings 3 and 2. That gives the bright, close sound of the ukulele. Soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles all use it.
Strings are numbered from the floor up: String 1 is A, nearest the floor when you play.
Tip. New nylon or fluorocarbon strings stretch for days. Tune, play for ten minutes, and tune again.

How the tuner hears a ukulele
Every ukulele string, C4 (261.63 Hz) to A4 (440.00 Hz), sits above the range where phone mics fade. In our phone-mic test the ukulele range read within about 1 ¢, and clean test tones within 0.2 ¢.

Questions
What are the standard ukulele notes?
From String 4 to String 1: G4 C4 E4 A4 (gCEA). At A4 = 440 Hz they are 392.00, 261.63, 329.63, 440.00 Hz.
Which octave is the G string?
In standard tuning String 4 is G4 (392 Hz), higher than C and E. With a Low G string it is G3 (196 Hz). Pick Low G in the tuning sheet so the tuner listens for the right octave.
Can I tune my ukulele lower or higher?
Yes. Use the ◂ ▸ arrows on the tuning chip to move every string by a half step. One half step down takes about 11% of the tension off; one half step up adds about 12% (approx.).
