Standard tuning

Baritone ukulele tuning

The baritone ukulele is tuned D3 G3 B3 E4, the same notes as strings 4 to 1 of a guitar.

Guitar chord shapes work on it, but they sound a fourth lower than the same shapes on a standard ukulele.

Tip. Its strings are longer and looser than on smaller ukuleles. Pluck a little firmer to give the tuner a clear note.

Questions

What are the standard baritone ukulele notes?

From String 4 to String 1: D3 G3 B3 E4 (DGBE). At A4 = 440 Hz they are 146.83, 196.00, 246.94, 329.63 Hz.

Can a baritone ukulele be tuned G C E A?

Yes, but only with strings made for it. Tuning the normal strings up a fourth would add far too much tension.

Can I tune my baritone ukulele lower or higher?

Yes. Use the ◂ ▸ arrows on the tuning chip to move every string by a half step. One half step down takes about 11% of the tension off; one half step up adds about 12% (approx.).
