About Go with the Flow

Go with the Flow, the second single from Songs for the Deaf (2002), is tabbed in C Standard (C F B♭ E♭ G C) on Songsterr's most detailed transcription, with all three guitar parts and the bass two whole steps down. The song centres on E, though, so in C Standard its low E is fretted at the 4th fret of String 6 instead of ringing open, and the bass leans on that note.

TuneLit measured the album about 9 cents sharp (A ≈ 442.4), and Go with the Flow reads a little sharper still, about 11 cents, close enough to share the album's value. Tune opens C Standard with the reference raised to match; at plain A 440 you would sit a shade flat.

Because the song lives in E, the E Standard versions of this tab are very popular: they let the riff ring on open strings and play the same notes on the record. If you only want to jam along, that works. To play it the way it was recorded, with the band's string feel and the same fingering as the rest of the album, use C Standard and fret the E.

Tip: In C Standard, find the E at the 4th fret of String 6 and check it against the record's first chord before you start.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to C Standard, every string +9 ¢, the notes Go with the Flow was recorded in.
  2. From E Standard: Every string down 4 half steps. No tuner that knows C Standard? Clamp a capo across fret 4, tune to E Standard as usual, then take it off: every string drops to C Standard. Check each string again afterwards, since a capo pulls the strings a little sharp.
  3. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Go with the Flow sits 9 cents sharp on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much flat against it, which Tune already corrects.
  4. Then play Go with the Flow along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.

Move the record into your tuning

Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move Go with the Flow instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in C Standard +9 ¢. Choose E Standard at A 440 and Go with the Flow moves up 3 half steps and 91 cents, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
