About Gone Away
Gone Away, from Ixnay on the Hombre (1997), is in E Standard in every tab, but it never uses the open low E: its chords sit on F, A♭, E♭ and B♭. That is why TuneLit's audio check could not confirm the semitone from the record alone; the tuning rests on the tabs, which all agree.
Ixnay is the sharpest Offspring album TuneLit measured, about 10 cents above concert pitch (A ≈ 442.5), and Tune sets that +10 ¢. Gone Away itself reads lower, about 4 cents sharp, so the album setting puts you roughly 6 cents above the record. If the sustained chords beat against it, lower Fine-tune by a few cents.
Don't confuse this version with the 2021 remake on Let the Bad Times Roll. That one is a piano ballad a half step below the 1997 recording: to play it with the same chord shapes, tune down to E♭ Standard, or stay in E Standard and play everything one fret lower.
Tip: This page is the 1997 band version: tap Tune for +10 ¢, then lower Fine-tune about 6 cents if the chords sound sharp against the record.
Step by step
Tune your guitar like the record
- Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E Standard, every string +10 ¢, the notes Gone Away was recorded in.
- Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Gone Away sits 10 cents sharp on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much flat against it, which Tune already corrects.
- Then play Gone Away along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
Or the other way round
