Standard tuning

Viola tuning

The viola is tuned C3 G3 D4 A4. It shares G, D and A with the violin; the low C is the same note as on a cello, one octave higher.

Tune A first, then work down: D, G, C.

Tip. The C string is thick and slow to speak. Bow it with steady weight for a second before you read the tuner.

How the tuner hears a viola

Every viola string, C3 (130.81 Hz) to A4 (440.00 Hz), sits above the range where phone mics fade. In our phone-mic test the viola range read within about 1 ¢, and clean test tones within 0.2 ¢.

Shift the whole tuning

The tuner can move all four strings together, from an octave down to an octave up, and add fine cents on top. Each step keeps every chord shape the same.

Questions

What are the standard viola notes?

From String 4 to String 1: C3 G3 D4 A4 (CGDA). At A4 = 440 Hz they are 130.81, 196.00, 293.66, 440.00 Hz.

Is a viola tuned like a violin?

Almost. Both are tuned in fifths, but the viola drops the violin's E string and adds a low C: C G D A instead of G D A E.

Can I tune my viola lower or higher?

Yes. Use the ◂ ▸ arrows on the tuning chip to move every string by a half step. One half step down takes about 11% of the tension off; one half step up adds about 12% (approx.).
