Standard tuning

8-string guitar tuning

An 8-string guitar adds F♯1 (46.25 Hz) and B1 below the six standard strings. The low F♯ sits close to the low E of a bass guitar.

Strings 1 to 7 are tuned like a 7-string guitar, so most chord shapes carry over.

Tip. Tune string 8 last. Its 5th fret is B, the same note as open string 7, which is an easy check by ear.

How the tuner hears an 8-string guitar

On a phone, F♯1 is the hardest 8-string guitar string to hear: in our phone-mic model its fundamental arrives about 14 dB quieter, so the tuner works from the overtones and checks the octave against your tuning. In our phone-mic test F♯1 still read within about 2 ¢, the 8-string guitar strings above it within about 1 ¢, and clean test tones within 0.2 ¢.

Low notes. The lowest string here is F♯1 at 46.25 Hz. Most phone mics lose a lot of level below 80–100 Hz, so they mostly hear the string's overtones. If the reading jumps, play the 12th-fret harmonic with the ×2 harmonic mode, or plug in through an audio interface. That's physics, not you.

String tension

A typical 10–74 set on a 27″ scale pulls about 170 lb (77 kg) in F♯ Standard, or 21.3 lb per string on average.

The tuner can move all eight strings together, from an octave down to an octave up, and add fine cents on top. Each step keeps every chord shape the same.

Questions

What are the standard 8-string guitar notes?

From String 8 to String 1: F♯1 B1 E2 A2 D3 G3 B3 E4 (F♯ Standard). At A4 = 440 Hz they are 46.25, 61.74, 82.41, 110.00, 146.83, 196.00, 246.94, 329.63 Hz.

Why does my 8th string read an octave high?

Small mics pick up the second harmonic of a very low string better than its fundamental. If the reading still sits an octave high, play the 12th-fret harmonic and switch on the ×2 harmonic mode.

Can I tune my 8-string guitar lower or higher?

Yes. Use the ◂ ▸ arrows on the tuning chip to move every string by a half step. One half step down takes about 11% of the tension off; one half step up adds about 12% (approx.).
