Standard tuning

Balalaika (prima) tuning

The prima balalaika has three strings: two tuned to the same E4 and one to A4. It is the lead voice of the balalaika family.

The two E strings are usually played together, so they must match exactly.

Tip. Tune String 1 (A) first. Then tune both E strings until they sound like one note with no wobble.

How the tuner hears a balalaika

Every balalaika string, E4 (329.63 Hz) to A4 (440.00 Hz), sits above the range where phone mics fade. In our phone-mic test the balalaika range read within about 1 ¢, and clean test tones within 0.2 ¢.

Shift the whole tuning

The tuner can move all three strings together, from an octave down to an octave up, and add fine cents on top. Each step keeps every chord shape the same.

Questions

What are the standard balalaika (prima) notes?

From String 3 to String 1: E4 E4 A4 (EEA). At A4 = 440 Hz they are 329.63, 329.63, 440.00 Hz.

What about secunda, alto and bass balalaikas?

They use other notes: secunda A3 A3 D4, alto E3 E3 A3, bass E2 A2 D3. Use the chromatic tuner for them for now.

Can I tune my balalaika (prima) lower or higher?

Yes. Use the ◂ ▸ arrows on the tuning chip to move every string by a half step. One half step down takes about 11% of the tension off; one half step up adds about 12% (approx.).
