Standard tuning

Mandolin tuning

The mandolin has four pairs of strings tuned G3 D4 A4 E5. Both strings of a pair play the same note.

When both strings of a pair are in tune, the slow wobble (beating) between them disappears.

The neck is short, about 35 cm from nut to bridge, and the eight steel strings are tight, so a small turn of a tuner moves the note a long way. Turn slowly and pluck often.

Tip. Tune one string of each pair with the tuner, then tune its partner by ear until the wobble stops.

How the tuner hears a mandolin

Every mandolin string, G3 (196.00 Hz) to E5 (659.26 Hz), sits above the range where phone mics fade. In our phone-mic test the mandolin range read within about 1 ¢, and clean test tones within 0.2 ¢.

Shift the whole tuning

The tuner can move all four pairs of strings together, from an octave down to an octave up, and add fine cents on top. Each step keeps every chord shape the same.

Questions

What are the standard mandolin notes?

From String 4 to String 1: G3 D4 A4 E5 (GDAE). At A4 = 440 Hz they are 196.00, 293.66, 440.00, 659.26 Hz.

Does the tuner hear both strings of a pair?

It hears whatever is loudest. Pluck one string of the pair at a time for the clearest reading.

Can I tune my mandolin lower or higher?

Yes. Use the ◂ ▸ arrows on the tuning chip to move every string by a half step. One half step down takes about 11% of the tension off; one half step up adds about 12% (approx.).
