Standard tuning

Cavaquinho tuning

The Brazilian cavaquinho is usually tuned D4 G4 B4 D5, an open G chord. It is the small four-string heart of samba and choro.

Its steel strings are short and bright, so the tuner reads them fast.

Tip. Short steel strings break easily if you go past the note. Tune up slowly and stop the moment the meter shows ✓ in tune.

How the tuner hears a cavaquinho

Every cavaquinho string, D4 (293.66 Hz) to D5 (587.33 Hz), sits above the range where phone mics fade. In our phone-mic test the cavaquinho range read within about 1 ¢, and clean test tones within 0.2 ¢.

Shift the whole tuning

The tuner can move all four strings together, from an octave down to an octave up, and add fine cents on top. Each step keeps every chord shape the same.

Questions

What are the standard cavaquinho notes?

From String 4 to String 1: D4 G4 B4 D5 (DGBD). At A4 = 440 Hz they are 293.66, 392.00, 493.88, 587.33 Hz.

Can a cavaquinho use guitar chord shapes?

Some players tune it D G B E, like the top four guitar strings an octave up, so guitar shapes work. The preset here is D G B D; for D G B E, tune String 1 with the chromatic tuner.

Can I tune my cavaquinho lower or higher?

Yes. Use the ◂ ▸ arrows on the tuning chip to move every string by a half step. One half step down takes about 11% of the tension off; one half step up adds about 12% (approx.).
