About Walk This Way
Walk This Way, from Toys in the Attic (1975), is one of the most-played Aerosmith tabs anywhere, and it is plain E Standard from start to finish. Joe Perry has said the riff moves from the key of C to E and back without any retuning, and the popular transcriptions agree on standard tuning.
TuneLit measured the Toys in the Attic CD a few cents flat overall, close enough that Tune opens plain E Standard at A 440. Walk This Way itself reads about 7 cents flat, a little lower than the album, and TuneLit's audio check hears the open low E at that pitch, which confirms the tuning. Most players won't notice 7 cents, but on headphones you may hear a slow wobble against the record.
The tab is not the problem here; the neighbours are. On the same album the title track sits about 9 cents sharp and Sweet Emotion about 13 cents flat, so if you play the record through, retune between songs. The 1986 remake with Run-DMC is a different recording, and TuneLit has not measured it.
Tip: Start at A 440 and, if the riff wobbles against the record, lower Fine-tune by about 7 cents to sit where this song does.
Step by step
Tune your guitar like the record
- Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E Standard, the notes Walk This Way was recorded in.
- Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Walk This Way sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
- Then play Walk This Way along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
