About Longview

Longview, Dookie's first single and Green Day's first music video, opens with Mike Dirnt's walking bass line under Tré Cool's drums before the guitar comes in. Like the rest of the album, it is played a half step down, E♭ A♭ D♭ G♭ B♭ E♭, guitar and bass alike, and the tabs agree on that without exception.

This song has its own setting. Most of Dookie sits about 15 cents above E♭ Standard, but TuneLit measured Longview at only 1.7 cents above it, which counts as concert pitch, so its Tune button gives plain E♭ Standard at A 440. Chump, which runs straight into it on the album, measures the same way. TuneLit's audio check hears the open E♭ low string clearly.

Bassists get the most out of this one: the verse line is the song's hook, and a bass left in E Standard would have to play it in different positions from every tab. Tune the bass down a half step too, with the same reference. If you tuned for Basket Case with the album's 15-cent offset, take it back to zero before playing along here, or you will be a little sharp against the record.

Tip: Reset the offset to zero for Longview, tune guitar and bass down to E♭, and check against the bass line in the opening bars.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E♭ Standard, the notes Longview was recorded in.
  2. From E Standard: Every string down a half step. No tuner that knows E♭ Standard? Clamp a capo across fret 1, tune to E Standard as usual, then take it off: every string drops to E♭ Standard. Check each string again afterwards, since a capo pulls the strings a little sharp.
  3. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Longview sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
  4. Then play Longview along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.

Move the record into your tuning

Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move Longview instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in E♭ Standard. Choose E Standard at A 440 and Longview moves up 98 cents, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
