About Hallowed Be Thy Name
Hallowed Be Thy Name closes The Number of the Beast (1982): a slow, brooding opening, then a long gallop and some of the band's most famous harmony leads, over seven minutes in all. It is in E Standard and stays close to E. In Songsterr's transcription Adrian Smith's main part centres on the E at the 7th fret of String 5 and the B at the 9th fret of String 4, and Steve Harris's bass spends four notes in ten on the E at the 7th fret of his A string, with D and C on the same string below it.
TuneLit measured the album at about 2 ¢ sharp on the 1995 two-disc reissue, concert pitch, and this song reads about 4 ¢ high, within the same margin. Tune sets plain E Standard at A 440, and TuneLit's check from the audio agrees that the low string is E.
The harmony leads are the test: two guitars playing the same line at different pitches, so a few cents between you and the record turn into a slow wobble. Both the Smith and the Murray parts in the tab use the open low E for the heavy accents, about eighty-five times each, which makes String 6 easy to check in the middle of the song. Tune up, then play the first harmony phrase along with the record before you work on the rest.
Tip: Tune to A 440, then hold the open low E against one of the heavy accents in the gallop to confirm String 6.
