About Foxey Lady
The opening track of the British edition, as Foxy Lady, and the tenth song of the American one, spelled Foxey Lady. It starts with a single note, an F bent up to F♯ with a wide vibrato, swelling into feedback before Hendrix slides down into the dominant seventh sharp ninth chord of the riff. The record was cut in one session at CBS Studios in London, apart from a few overdubs, and the tabs play it in plain E Standard.
TuneLit reads the song about 4 ¢ flat on the 1991 Polydor CD, a little closer to A 440 than the album's 7 ¢ (A ≈ 438.1). The difference is too small for a value of its own, so the button uses the album's E Standard 7 ¢ down. The audio check hears E as the lowest open string.
The opening bend is the best place to check your tuning: fret the note, bend it up to F♯ with the record and listen for the two pitches to merge. Tabs of the live versions, from Monterey, Woodstock or Miami, are in E♭, because Hendrix tuned a half step down on stage from mid-1967; they put you a half step under the album. Foxy or Foxey, it is the same studio recording on every edition.
Tip: Match the opening bend to F♯ against the record before the riff starts; if it lands sharp, lower the reference a few cents.
Step by step
Tune your guitar like the record
- Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E Standard, every string −7 ¢, the notes Foxey Lady was recorded in.
- Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Foxey Lady sits 7 cents flat on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much sharp against it, which Tune already corrects.
- Then play Foxey Lady along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
