About Ramble On

From Led Zeppelin II (1969): acoustic verses over John Paul Jones's melodic bass, then a heavier electric chorus. Both the acoustic and the electric parts are in plain E Standard.

TuneLit measured an original 1980s Atlantic CD. Ramble On sits about 17 ¢ sharp (A ≈ 444.3) from start to finish, the sharpest song on the album, while the album as a whole is about 6 ¢ flat (A ≈ 438.6). So it has its own value, and Tune sets E Standard 17 ¢ up. At A 440 a guitar sounds clearly flat against the record, most of all in the acoustic verses.

Led Zeppelin II was recorded in different studios between tour dates, and its songs do not share one pitch: going on to Moby Dick means coming back down by about 23 ¢. TuneLit's audio check hears the open low E right on the measured grid, so the offset is the record's pitch, not a different tuning.

Tip: Use the song's own +17 ¢ button and check it against the acoustic intro before the electric chorus comes in.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E Standard, every string +17 ¢, the notes Ramble On was recorded in.
  2. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Ramble On sits 17 cents sharp on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much flat against it, which Tune already corrects.
  3. Then play Ramble On along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
