About Burn It Down
Burn It Down was the first single from Living Things (2012), a synth-heavy song with a big guitar chorus. Its Songsterr tab writes Brad Delson's part on a Fender Stratocaster in Drop D (D A D G B E), with the bass in Drop D as well, the tuning of most of the heavier songs on Living Things.
Burn It Down reads within about a cent of A 440, so Tune opens Drop D with no offset at all, and the semitone check confirms the open D (0.96). On the record the bass works mostly on F, G and D.
Because synths carry so much of the song, it is easy to lose the guitar in the mix; learn the chorus first, where the Drop D guitar is loudest and the tuning easiest to hear. Living Things switches between Drop D and E Standard from song to song: Lost in the Echo, In My Remains and Lies Greed Misery share this tuning, while Castle of Glass, I'll Be Gone and Roads Untraveled bring the 6th string back up to E. A single Strat in Drop D covers this one; keep the D steady with a quick check between songs, since the 6th string is the one that moves most.
Tip: Drop the 6th string to D at A 440, check it in the chorus, and raise it back to E before Castle of Glass.
Step by step
Tune your guitar like the record
- Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to Drop D, the notes Burn It Down was recorded in.
- From E Standard: String 6 down a whole step (E → D); the other strings stay.
- Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Burn It Down sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
- Then play Burn It Down along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
Or the other way round
