About Mechanix
Mechanix closes Megadeth's 1985 debut, Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good!. Dave Mustaine played it with Metallica before he was fired, and Metallica later slowed it down and rebuilt it as The Four Horsemen. Megadeth's version keeps the original breakneck tempo, with Mustaine and Chris Poland on guitars, and its riffs are built around the open String 6. Every main tab writes it in E Standard shapes.
The record is not at concert pitch, though. TuneLit measured the debut about 37 ¢ flat (A ≈ 431), and Mechanix reads close to that, around 40 ¢ low. So Tune sets E Standard −37 ¢: every string a little more than a third of a semitone under A 440. TuneLit's check from the audio hears that flattened E as the lowest open string, not the E♭ below it.
That matters because Songsterr also carries a popular E♭ version of Mechanix. Tuned to E♭ at A 440 you end up about 60 ¢ under the record, further off than plain E Standard. And if you know the riff from The Four Horsemen, note that Metallica's Kill 'Em All measures about 16 ¢ sharp, so the two records sit about half a semitone apart.
Tip: Tap Tune for E Standard −37 ¢ and check String 6 against the first open-string gallop; do not grab the E♭ tab.
Step by step
Tune your guitar like the record
- Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E Standard, every string −37 ¢, the notes Mechanix was recorded in.
- Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Mechanix sits 37 cents flat on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much sharp against it, which Tune already corrects.
- Then play Mechanix along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
Or the other way round
