About New Millennium Cyanide Christ
The second track of Chaosphere (1998), the last Meshuggah album on seven strings, and one of the band's most played songs. It uses the same seven-string tuning as the rest of the record, a half step down: B♭ E♭ A♭ D♭ G♭ B♭ E♭. The main riff sits on the open String 7, a stop-start chug on the low B♭ broken by fretted notes higher up, with Thordendal's fluid, legato solo over the top.
Chaosphere measures about 16 ¢ sharp (A ≈ 444) as an album. This song reads higher still, about 29 ¢ sharp, and that number repeats within a cent on all five CD editions TuneLit measured, from the 1998 original to the 2024 remaster. The confidence of each reading stays just below what TuneLit needs to give a song its own setting, so the button uses the album's +16 ¢. The semitone check from the audio agrees with B♭.
If your guitar sounds slightly flat against the record after pressing Tune, that 13 ¢ gap is the reason. Raise Fine-tune by about that much rather than reaching for another tuning, since the strings themselves are right.
Tip: Press Tune, then lift Fine-tune by roughly 13 ¢ and compare the open B♭ with the first chug of the main riff until the beating stops.
Step by step
Tune your guitar like the record
- Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to B♭ Standard, every string +16 ¢, the notes New Millennium Cyanide Christ was recorded in.
- From B Standard: Every string down a half step. No tuner that knows B♭ Standard? Clamp a capo across fret 1, tune to B Standard as usual, then take it off: every string drops to B♭ Standard. Check each string again afterwards, since a capo pulls the strings a little sharp.
- Turn String 7 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. New Millennium Cyanide Christ sits 16 cents sharp on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much flat against it, which Tune already corrects.
- Then play New Millennium Cyanide Christ along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 7 should ring together without a wobble.
