Offset from concert pitch (A 440). Spread: the middle half of the songs, when four or more share the album's pitch. Confidence: how well the notes agree with one grid.

Before we measured, sources said: F Standard, with no pitch given (widely reported).

The low-F album. The eight-strings the band had ordered were not usable in time, so Thordendal and Hagström recorded on seven-strings tuned down into eight-string range and had to retune every few bars. In 2006 Nothing was reissued with the guitars re-recorded on real eight-strings, the drums rebuilt and Nebulous and Obsidian reworked; TuneLit measured the original 2002 release, about 10 ¢ sharp (A ≈ 443), not the reissue. Stengah, Perpetual Black Second, Glints Collide and Organic Shadows drop the low string to E, Spasm drops it an octave below the next string, Obsidian takes it down to D and Nebulous sits a whole step below the rest; the audio check confirms the low F of the plain songs, the E of Stengah and the E♭ of Nebulous.

    Notes

How to get there from the album's F Standard: String 8 down a half step (F → E); the other strings stay.

The eighth string drops to E; the one tab also lowers the upper strings a half step.

The low string drops to E as on Stengah. The one Songsterr tab tunes the other strings a half step lower too (E A D G C E A); TuneLit lists the album's upper strings, which the measurement cannot tell apart from the tab's.

    Notes

How to get there from the album's F Standard: String 8 down 7 half steps (F → B♭); the other strings stay.

The eighth string goes down to B♭, an octave below the seventh, around 29 Hz.

The lowest string goes all the way down to B♭, an octave below the next string; the Songsterr tab and PMT's Meshuggah guide agree. TuneLit's audio check could not judge it.

  9. 9. Nebulous

    Different tuning

    D♯ Standard +10 ¢Measured

    Notes

How to get there from the album's F Standard: Every string down a whole step.

A whole step below the rest of the album on every string, confirmed by TuneLit's audio check on the 2002 CD.

The Songsterr tab puts every string a whole step below the album, eight-string standard down three half steps (E♭ A♭ D♭ G♭ B E A♭ D♭). The 2006 reissue slowed Nebulous down, so the tab may follow that version. TuneLit's audio check hears that low E♭ on the original 2002 CD, so the tab holds for this version too.

  10. 10. Obsidian

    Different tuning

    D1 B♭1 E♭2 A♭2 D♭3 G♭3 B♭3 E♭4Measured

    Notes

How to get there from the album's F Standard: String 8 down 3 half steps (F → D); the other strings stay.

The eighth string drops to D. Measured at concert pitch, lower than the rest of the album.

The lowest string drops to D, a minor third below the album's F; PMT's guide names Obsidian as the D song and the Songsterr tab agrees. The 2006 reissue almost doubles its length. TuneLit measured it at concert pitch, about 10 ¢ below the rest of the album.

Questions

What tuning is Nothing in?

Meshuggah recorded Nothing (2002) in F Standard, about 10 cents sharp (A ≈ 443), measured by TuneLit on the CD. 7 songs use other tunings or pitches, listed song by song on this page.

Why does Nothing sound out of tune with my guitar?

The record sits about 10 cents sharp (A ≈ 443), so a guitar tuned to A 440 clashes with it. The Tune buttons on this page set the tuner's reference to match the record, song by song, so you only tune the strings.
