About Breed to Breathe

The opener of Inside the Torn Apart (1997), from Napalm Death's C♯ years, with Mitch Harris and Jesse Pintado on guitar and Shane Embury on bass. It is in C♯ Standard, every string a step and a half down (C♯ F♯ B E G♯ C♯). The Songsterr tab, a Guitar Pro file and a bass tab all agree; the bass follows the guitars an octave down, C♯ F♯ B E.

TuneLit measured the CD about 7 ¢ sharp (A ≈ 442), the most confident reading of any Napalm Death album it measured. Breed to Breathe itself reads a little lower, about 3 ¢ sharp, too close to matter, so Tune uses the album's +7 ¢. A guitar at A 440 sounds only very slightly flat against it. TuneLit's semitone check from the audio hears the open low C♯ and agrees with the tabs.

Two things trip players up. Some Napalm Death files are written in E Standard or with a dropped string as a transcriber's shortcut, and played as written they come out a step and a half too high. And the band moved to D Standard in 2000, so a tab from the later albums is a half step off here. A step and a half down is also slack on a normal set; heavier strings keep the riffs tight.

Tip: Tune String 6 to C♯ and check it against the bass on the record, an octave below your open strings: if the two clash, you are a half step off.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to C♯ Standard, every string +7 ¢, the notes Breed to Breathe was recorded in.
  2. From E Standard: Every string down 3 half steps. No tuner that knows C♯ Standard? Clamp a capo across fret 3, tune to E Standard as usual, then take it off: every string drops to C♯ Standard. Check each string again afterwards, since a capo pulls the strings a little sharp.
  3. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Breed to Breathe sits 7 cents sharp on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much flat against it, which Tune already corrects.
  4. Then play Breed to Breathe along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
