About In Bloom
In Bloom, the second track on Nevermind (1991), pairs a heavy, swinging riff with a big sing-along chorus. TuneLit lists it in E Standard (E A D G B E), like the main tab, and marks it disputed because one account points elsewhere.
TuneLit measured the Nevermind CD about 14 ¢ sharp (A ≈ 443.6), and In Bloom reads about 15 ¢, in line with the album. Its Tune button sets E Standard +14 ¢, so a guitar at A 440 sounds slightly flat against the record.
Producer Butch Vig later remembered the band tuning down to D, or maybe C♯, and MOJO printed that memory under In Bloom. The record does not back it up: the low notes TuneLit counted match the E Standard tab's bass line almost note for note, and neither D nor C♯ really sounds. The open low E is hardly used either, which is why TuneLit's audio check could not settle the string on its own. A Songsterr tab in E♭ Standard is nearly as popular, but it is the main tab with every string a half step lower, so it plays a half step below the record.
Tip: Use the E Standard tab with Tune's +14 ¢; a tab in E♭ is a transposed copy and will sound a half step low.
Step by step
Tune your guitar like the record
- Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E Standard, every string +14 ¢, the notes In Bloom was recorded in.
- Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. In Bloom sits 14 cents sharp on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much flat against it, which Tune already corrects.
- Then play In Bloom along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
Or the other way round
Move the record into your tuning
Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move In Bloom instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in E Standard +14 ¢. Choose E Standard at A 440 and In Bloom moves down 14 cents, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
