About Domination

Domination, from Cowboys from Hell (1990), is one of the album's fastest songs and ends in a slow, crushing breakdown. It is tabbed in E Standard (E A D G B E), in the same flat E as most of the record.

TuneLit measured the album about 21 ¢ flat (A ≈ 434.8) on the CD. Domination reads about 17 ¢ flat, close enough to share the album value, so its Tune button sets E Standard at A 435. At plain A 440 your guitar will sound sharp against the record, and at the A 425 often quoted for Dime it will sound flat. TuneLit's check from the audio agrees that the lowest open string is E.

Domination opened Pantera's shows in 1990 and 1991, and from 1992 the band also played it as a medley with Hollow, the version heard on Official Live: 101 Proof (1997). Hollow is tabbed in E♭ on its studio album, but the tab of the live medley stays in the same flat E all the way through. TuneLit has not measured the live album, so start from A 435 and adjust by ear.

Tip: Tune to E Standard at A 435 and check against the opening riff; for the live medley with Hollow, keep the same tuning.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E Standard at A 435, the notes Domination was recorded in.
  2. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Domination sits 21 cents flat on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much sharp against it, which Tune already corrects.
  3. Then play Domination along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
