About In My Head

In My Head, a single from Lullabies to Paralyze (2005), is in plain E Standard on Songsterr and on every main UG tab. It belongs to the side of the album that left the old C Standard behind: the three heavy songs before it are in C, while this one is played on a normally tuned guitar, with Homme on bass and Troy Van Leeuwen and Alain Johannes on guitars in the Songsterr credits.

TuneLit measured the album at concert pitch and this song about 4 cents sharp, still within what counts as A 440. Tune opens E Standard with no offset, and the audio check confirms the open low E on the record.

The steady, all-downstrokes strumming is the thing to practise; the tabs agree on that as well. One UG tab says it is in E Standard but adds that the band usually plays in C, which is true of the early albums and not of this song. If you are playing the album in order, retune after Tangled Up in Plaid: from Burn the Witch on, everything is in E Standard except Little Sister and Someone's in the Wolf.

Tip: Check String 6 against the record's opening low E, then keep your strumming hand moving in steady downstrokes.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E Standard, the notes In My Head was recorded in.
  2. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. In My Head sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
  3. Then play In My Head along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.

Move the record into your tuning

Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move In My Head instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in E Standard. Choose E Standard at A 440 and In My Head moves down 1 cent, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
