About Feuer frei!

Feuer frei! is the fifth track on Mutter (2001), and it reached a wider audience through the 2002 action film xXx. Every tab of it on Songsterr and Ultimate Guitar uses Drop D. The note heard most in the low end is G, five frets up from the open D, so the dropped string is less obvious here than on Sonne or Ich will.

TuneLit measured Mutter at about +2 ¢, which counts as concert pitch, and Feuer frei! reads about 2 ¢ sharp on its own, so Tune opens Drop D at A 440. Even though the open D is rare, TuneLit's semitone check from the audio still confirms D as the lowest open string.

Because the low end lives on G, you can be fooled into thinking the song is in a different tuning; it is not. The dropped string still matters, because the one-finger power chords that move around the riff only work with String 6 at D. If the riff sounds right but the low hits sound sour, String 6 is the culprit. Songsterr also has a version written for E Standard, for players who do not want to retune; it changes the fingering, so use Drop D to match the record.

Tip: Tune String 6 to D even though the low end sits on G: the power chords around it need the dropped string.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to Drop D, the notes Feuer frei! was recorded in.
  2. From E Standard: String 6 down a whole step (E → D); the other strings stay.
  3. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Feuer frei! sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
  4. Then play Feuer frei! along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.

Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move Feuer frei! instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in Drop D. Choose Drop D at A 440 and Feuer frei! moves down 2 cents, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
