About Du hast

Du hast is the fifth track on Sehnsucht (1997) and one of Rammstein's best-known songs. Songsterr and Ultimate Guitar tab it in E Standard. The guitar part is a short, hard figure on the A and D strings around the 2nd fret, with a slide down from the 7th fret into it, and between the hits the keyboard line and the vocal carry the song.

TuneLit measured Sehnsucht about 5 ¢ sharp (A ≈ 441.3), the sharpest Rammstein album, so Tune sets the tuner 5 ¢ up. On a single note you would barely notice, but on the long held chords of the chorus a guitar at plain A 440 starts to sound slightly flat. TuneLit's semitone check from the audio agrees that E is the lowest open string.

The open low E is hardly needed, which is why many players learn Du hast in Drop D, the tuning of most of the album: the shapes on the A and D strings are the same in both tunings. If you play Sehnsucht from start to finish, staying in Drop D for this song saves a retune. What decides whether it sounds like the record is the right hand, because the silences between the hits have to be as exact as the hits themselves.

Tip: Tune String 5 against the record first: the riff lives on the A and D strings, and the low E barely matters.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E Standard, every string +5 ¢, the notes Du hast was recorded in.
  2. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Du hast sits 5 cents sharp on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much flat against it, which Tune already corrects.
  3. Then play Du hast along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.

Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move Du hast instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in E Standard +5 ¢. Choose E Standard at A 440 and Du hast moves down 5 cents, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
