About Inner Self

From Beneath the Remains (1989), recorded in Rio de Janeiro with Scott Burns, Inner Self is a fast thrash song in plain E Standard. Every song on the album is tabbed in E, and Max Cavalera has said nothing Sepultura wrote before Chaos A.D. was tuned down. Max and Andreas Kisser play the guitars.

The record is sharp. TuneLit measured the CD about 18 ¢ above concert pitch (A ≈ 445), the sharpest Sepultura album, and Inner Self reads about 17 ¢ sharp, right with it. A guitar tuned to a perfect A 440 sounds clearly flat against this song; Tune sets the tuner 18 ¢ up. The semitone check from the audio confirms the low E.

Nothing about the tuning itself is tricky; the pitch is the whole story. Remasters from 1997 and 2020 read a few cents lower than the original CD but still clearly sharp, so the offset is in the tapes. If you play along with a remaster, you may want a few cents less; near 440 Hz, one hertz is about 4 ¢.

Tip: Do not tune to a plain A 440 for this one: press Tune, or set the reference to about 445 Hz, and the riffs will sit with the record.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E Standard, every string +18 ¢, the notes Inner Self was recorded in.
  2. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Inner Self sits 18 cents sharp on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much flat against it, which Tune already corrects.
  3. Then play Inner Self along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.

Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move Inner Self instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in E Standard +18 ¢. Choose E Standard at A 440 and Inner Self moves down 18 cents, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
