About Disciple

Disciple is the first full song on God Hates Us All (2001), straight after the intro Darkness of Christ, from the album recorded in Vancouver with producer Matt Hyde. It is in C♯ Standard (C♯ F♯ B E G♯ C♯), every string a step and a half down, the main tuning of the album.

TuneLit measured the CD at concert pitch (+3 ¢, A ≈ 440.8), and Disciple reads about 4 ¢ flat, also inside the concert-pitch margin. Its Tune button sets C♯ Standard at A 440, so a normal tuner is all you need once the strings are down. TuneLit's check from the audio agrees that the lowest open string is C♯.

Two naming traps. In a 2001 interview Kerry King described the album's main tuning as "D sharp", and in Slayer talk "D♯" usually means E♭, but the record's low notes are C♯, a whole step lower. Also, four songs on the album drop to B, so do not carry this tuning blindly across the record. For C♯, King strings his guitar with .010–.046 to keep the strings from going slack.

Tip: Lower every string a step and a half to C♯ (not the E♭ Slayer call "D♯"), with heavier strings such as King's .010–.046 if your usual set feels slack.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to C♯ Standard, the notes Disciple was recorded in.
  2. From E Standard: Every string down 3 half steps. No tuner that knows C♯ Standard? Clamp a capo across fret 3, tune to E Standard as usual, then take it off: every string drops to C♯ Standard. Check each string again afterwards, since a capo pulls the strings a little sharp.
  3. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Disciple sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
  4. Then play Disciple along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.

Move the record into your tuning

Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move Disciple instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in C♯ Standard. Choose E Standard at A 440 and Disciple moves up 2 half steps and 97 cents, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
