About The Devil in I

The Devil in I is a single from .5: The Gray Chapter (2014), the first Slipknot album after Paul Gray's death, with Alessandro Venturella on bass and Jay Weinberg on drums. It is one of the album's two songs in Drop A (A E A D F♯ B), the other being Sarcastrophe, and the bass is tabbed at A E A D.

The CD sits at concert pitch, and this song reads about 7 ¢ sharp, too close to the album for a setting of its own, so the Tune button sets plain Drop A at A 440. TuneLit's semitone check from the audio confirms the low A.

Tabs explain Drop A as every string two and a half steps down, with String 6 a further whole step. That is a lot of slack: on a standard-scale guitar, a heavier set keeps the low A from flapping. A Drop D version on Songsterr is popular with players who do not want to retune that far, but against the record it sits a fourth too high. A Drop B tab exists too, a whole step too high. Only the Drop A tabs match the CD, and they include Jim Root's clean part.

Tip: Tune each string down two and a half steps, drop String 6 a further whole step to A, and check it against the bass in the chorus.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to Drop A, the notes The Devil in I was recorded in.
  2. From the album's Drop B: Every string down a whole step.
  3. String 6 sits 7 half steps below its standard E2. On a normal set (.046) it keeps only about 45 % of its usual tension and feels loose. For the usual feel use about a .069 string, or a baritone guitar.
  4. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. The Devil in I sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
  5. Then play The Devil in I along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
