About Vermilion Pt. 2
Vermilion Pt. 2 re-works Vermilion, from the same album, as a quiet acoustic song, and it shows that Slipknot keep their tuning even without distortion. The main tab puts both acoustic guitars in Drop B (B F♯ B E G♯ C♯), with the bass at B F♯ B E, so the low strings ring far deeper than on a typical acoustic ballad.
It is one of the most reliable readings on the whole album: TuneLit measured it about 7.5 ¢ sharp with high confidence, close to the album's +5 ¢, and the semitone check from the audio hears the low B clearly. The Tune button sets Drop B +5 ¢ (A ≈ 441.2); for the last few cents, nudge the reference up by about half a hertz.
Drop B on an acoustic guitar needs care. A light acoustic set goes very slack at B, buzzes against the frets and goes sharp when you strum hard; a heavier set holds the pitch much better. The Songsterr versions in E Standard are labelled as simplified, and they will not match the record without a retune. A later remix, the Bloodstone mix, appears on the special edition of All Hope Is Gone.
Tip: Tune the acoustic to Drop B and strum lightly while you check it, because a hard strum pulls slack strings sharp.
Step by step
Tune your guitar like the record
- Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to Drop B, every string +5 ¢, the notes Vermilion Pt. 2 was recorded in.
- From E Standard: String 6 down 5 half steps (E → B), String 5 down 3 half steps (A → F♯), String 4 down 3 half steps (D → B), String 3 down 3 half steps (G → E), String 2 down 3 half steps (B → G♯), String 1 down 3 half steps (E → C♯).
- String 6 sits 5 half steps below its standard E2. On a normal set (.046) it keeps only about 55 % of its usual tension and feels loose. For the usual feel use about a .061 string, or a baritone guitar.
- Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Vermilion Pt. 2 sits 5 cents sharp on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much flat against it, which Tune already corrects.
- Then play Vermilion Pt. 2 along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
