About Unsainted

Unsainted, the lead single from We Are Not Your Kind (2019), opens with a choir before the band crashes in. It is in the band's usual Drop B (B F♯ B E G♯ C♯), with Alessandro Venturella's bass at B F♯ B E, and the main Songsterr tab splits Jim Root's lead lines from Mick Thomson's rhythm part.

TuneLit measured the CD at concert pitch, and Unsainted reads within a cent of it, so the Tune button sets plain Drop B at A 440. The semitone check from the audio agrees on the low B, and a tab of the band's 2020 BBC performance uses the same tuning.

The song moves fast, so a slack String 6 shows up at once as a sharp, wobbly note when you dig in. A heavier gauge on the low string helps, and so does tuning while the string rings rather than as you pick. Songsterr also has an acoustic arrangement in Drop D and a Drop D re-tab of the full band; neither matches the record. The 5-string bass tab is an arrangement for standard B E A D G and reaches the same low B.

Tip: Tune String 6 to B while it rings, then check it against the first heavy chord after the choir.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to Drop B, the notes Unsainted was recorded in.
  2. From E Standard: String 6 down 5 half steps (E → B), String 5 down 3 half steps (A → F♯), String 4 down 3 half steps (D → B), String 3 down 3 half steps (G → E), String 2 down 3 half steps (B → G♯), String 1 down 3 half steps (E → C♯).
  3. String 6 sits 5 half steps below its standard E2. On a normal set (.046) it keeps only about 55 % of its usual tension and feels loose. For the usual feel use about a .061 string, or a baritone guitar.
  4. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Unsainted sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
  5. Then play Unsainted along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
