About Incinerate

The lead single of Rather Ripped (2006), a Thurston Moore song built on two guitars in nearly the same tuning. The band's techs list Thurston's guitar in D D♯ A♯ D♯ G G and Lee Ranaldo's in D♯ D♯ A♯ D♯ G G; the only difference is the lowest string. TuneLit lists Lee's tuning, because its semitone check hears the D♯ as the lowest open string on the record and almost no low D.

TuneLit measured the album about 4 ¢ sharp (A ≈ 441.1), and this song sits close to it, so Tune sets the tuning 4 ¢ up.

The most-viewed Songsterr tab writes the main part with the same D♯ unison and keeps the low D for Thurston's overdubs. Either way, the riff shapes are identical, so a tab for one guitar works on the other. From standard: drop the low E a half step to D♯, drop the A string all the way to the same D♯, the D string to A♯, the G string to D♯, the B string to G, and the top E five frets down to G as well.

Tip: Tune the two low D♯ strings as a unison first; if you only play Thurston's overdubs, drop the lowest one a further half step to D.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to D♯2 D♯2 A♯2 D♯3 G3 G3, every string +4 ¢, the notes Incinerate was recorded in.
  2. From the album's D2 D♯2 A♯2 D♯3 G3 G3: String 6 up a half step (D → E♭); the other strings stay.
  3. String 1 sits 9 half steps below its standard E4. On a normal set (.010) it keeps only about 35 % of its usual tension and flaps. For the usual feel use about a .017 string, or a baritone guitar.
  4. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Incinerate sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
  5. Then play Incinerate along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
