About Outshined
The second single from Badmotorfinger (1991), written by Chris Cornell around a slow, Sabbath-heavy riff in Drop D. The low string goes down a whole step to D and stays there as a drone; the riff's odd bar is in seven, which gives it its stumbling swing. Kim Thayil has complained that the video cut his guitar solo short.
TuneLit measured the album about 6 ¢ sharp (A ≈ 441.5). Outshined itself reads close to concert pitch, a few cents below the album, a difference too small to give it its own value, so Tune uses the album's Drop D 6 ¢ setting. Either way, Drop D at A 440 is within a few cents of the CD.
Because the riff leans on the open D, an old or thin string 6 makes it wobble. Pick evenly and do not grip too hard on the fretted notes above the drone, or they bend sharp. The song is one of the most played Soundgarden tabs, and the main ones agree on Drop D; versions a half step lower exist for singers, not for the record.
Tip: Let the open D ring under the first bars and compare it with the record's bass before you start the riff.
Step by step
Tune your guitar like the record
- Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to Drop D, every string +6 ¢, the notes Outshined was recorded in.
- From E Standard: String 6 down a whole step (E → D); the other strings stay.
- Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Outshined sits 6 cents sharp on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much flat against it, which Tune already corrects.
- Then play Outshined along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
Or the other way round
