About I Saw Her Standing There
The opening track of Please Please Me (1963), counted in by McCartney and played live in the studio the way the band played it on stage. It is a fast rocker in E on open chords in standard tuning: E, A and B7 shapes in first position carry most of it, Harrison takes a short solo, and McCartney's bass walks underneath. No capo and no retuning.
TuneLit measured the 1987 mono CD. This song comes from the morning session of 11 February 1963 and sits about 9 ¢ flat (A ≈ 437.7), while the songs taped later that day sit around 28 ¢ flat. So it has its own setting, and Tune opens E Standard 9 ¢ down. Both vinyl copies TuneLit checked also read it above the rest of the album.
The trap is the album setting. If you stay at the album's −28 ¢ after playing along with Misery or Twist and Shout, you will sound almost 20 ¢ flat here, and the open E chord makes that easy to hear. One community tab writes the song in E♭ Standard; the record is in E, just slightly flat, so that tab leaves you a half step too low.
Tip: Use the song's own −9 ¢ rather than the album's −28 ¢, and check the open E chord against the first verse.
Step by step
Tune your guitar like the record
- Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E Standard, every string −9 ¢, the notes I Saw Her Standing There was recorded in.
- Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. I Saw Her Standing There sits 9 cents flat on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much sharp against it, which Tune already corrects.
- Then play I Saw Her Standing There along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
