Standard tuning

Domra (3-string) tuning

The small 3-string domra is tuned E4 A4 D5, in fourths. It is played with a pick and often leads Russian folk orchestras.

Alto and bass domras use the same pattern lower down: E3 A3 D4 and E2 A2 D3.

Tip. Russian books often write these notes as E1 A1 D2 (first octave). In the scientific names used here they are E4 A4 D5: the same notes.

How the tuner hears a domra

Every domra string, E4 (329.63 Hz) to D5 (587.33 Hz), sits above the range where phone mics fade. In our phone-mic test the domra range read within about 1 ¢, and clean test tones within 0.2 ¢.

Shift the whole tuning

The tuner can move all three strings together, from an octave down to an octave up, and add fine cents on top. Each step keeps every chord shape the same.

Questions

What are the standard domra (3-string) notes?

From String 3 to String 1: E4 A4 D5 (EAD). At A4 = 440 Hz they are 329.63, 440.00, 587.33 Hz.

Does it work for the 4-string domra?

The 4-string domra is tuned in fifths, G D A E, like a violin. Use the violin or mandolin tuner for it.

Can I tune my domra (3-string) lower or higher?

Yes. Use the ◂ ▸ arrows on the tuning chip to move every string by a half step. One half step down takes about 11% of the tension off; one half step up adds about 12% (approx.).
