About Double Drop D
Both E strings drop a whole step to D, so the open strings ring D on both sides. The notes: D A D G B D.
Double Drop D keeps the low D of Drop D and adds a D on top, so songs in D get a drone at both ends of the neck.
Also written: DADGBD
How to get there from standard
- String 6: lower a whole step (E2 → D2)
- String 5: no change (A2)
- String 4: no change (D3)
- String 3: no change (G3)
- String 2: no change (B3)
- String 1: lower a whole step (E4 → D4)
Quicker from Drop D: lower String 1 a whole step (E4 → D4).
Why players use it
Why Double Drop D
Double Drop D lowers both E strings to D, so a D chord has D at the bottom and at the top, two octaves apart. The chord sounds wide and settled, and a melody on the middle strings can move against a D that rings above and below it. Songs in D and G come easily; songs in E get harder, because both E strings are gone.
On the records
Who plays in Double Drop D
Neil Young's Cinnamon Girl is the best-known song in it. TuneLit has two: Led Zeppelin's Going to California on Led Zeppelin IV (1971), a fingerpicked acoustic song with John Paul Jones on mandolin, and Radiohead's Electioneering on OK Computer (1997). Some tabs of Electioneering leave the high string at E on Jonny Greenwood's and Ed O'Brien's guitars.

Playing tips
Playing in Double Drop D
Everything on String 1 moves two frets higher: the G at fret 3 is now at fret 5. To check the high D by ear, fret String 2 at the 3rd fret, which gives the same note. Normal strings are fine, though a light top string at D feels soft, so pick it gently. Going to California sits about 11 cents flat with the rest of Led Zeppelin IV, and its Tune button sets that for you.

String tension
Strings and tension
Strings 6 and 1: about 21% less tension (approx., same strings, same scale length).
Most players keep their usual strings for this. If the lowest string feels floppy or buzzes, go one gauge heavier on that string only.
