Standard tuning
Russian 7-string guitar tuning
The Russian guitar (semistrunnaya) has seven strings tuned to an open G major chord: D2 G2 B2 D3 G3 B3 D4. It is the classic guitar of Russian romance and bard songs.
Because the open strings already make a chord, many pieces use bars straight across the neck.
Tip. Strings 1, 4 and 7 are all D, in three octaves. Tune String 4 first, then match String 1 and String 7 to it by ear.

How the tuner hears a Russian 7-string guitar
On a phone, D2 is the hardest Russian 7-string guitar string to hear: in our phone-mic model its fundamental arrives about 6 dB quieter, so the tuner works from the overtones and checks the octave against your tuning. In our phone-mic test D2 still read within about 1 ¢, the Russian 7-string guitar strings above it within about 1 ¢, and clean test tones within 0.2 ¢.
Shift the whole tuning
The tuner can move all seven strings together, from an octave down to an octave up, and add fine cents on top. Each step keeps every chord shape the same.
