About The Truth

From Clawfinger's debut, Deaf Dumb Blind (1993), The Truth sets rapped vocals against short, heavy guitar riffs, as most of the album does. It is in Drop D, String 6 down a whole step from E to D, like every song on the album except Rosegrove. The Ultimate Guitar tab also has a slide part in the intro and verses.

TuneLit measured the CD about 9 ¢ sharp (A ≈ 442), and a 2014 reissue reads the same, so the offset is in the master. The Truth itself reads a little higher, about 13 ¢ sharp, at the top of the album's range, so Tune uses the album's +9 ¢. A guitar at A 440 sounds slightly flat against the record, though most players would still call it close. TuneLit's semitone check from the audio hears the open low D and agrees with the tabs.

If you play the album through, Rosegrove, the very next song, is the one in plain E Standard: bring String 6 back up from D for it, then down again for the rest.

Tip: Press Tune rather than tuning to a plain A 440: the record sits about 9 ¢ sharp, and the slide part in the intro shows any mismatch first.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to Drop D, every string +9 ¢, the notes The Truth was recorded in.
  2. From E Standard: String 6 down a whole step (E → D); the other strings stay.
  3. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. The Truth sits 9 cents sharp on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much flat against it, which Tune already corrects.
  4. Then play The Truth along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.

Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move The Truth instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in Drop D +9 ¢. Choose Drop D at A 440 and The Truth moves down 9 cents, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
