About Do What I Say

From Clawfinger's second album, Use Your Brain (1995): rapped vocals over programmed beats, with short, heavy guitar riffs from Bård Torstensen and Erlend Ottem underneath. Like almost all of the album, it is in Drop D: standard tuning with only String 6 lowered a whole step, from E to D, so one finger across the three lowest strings plays a power chord. Its Ultimate Guitar tab is the best-rated Clawfinger tab on the site.

TuneLit measured the CD about 6 ¢ sharp (A ≈ 442), and Tune includes that offset. Do What I Say alone reads lower, about 1 ¢ sharp, practically concert pitch; the gap is too small to hear, so the song keeps the album value. Either way, a guitar at A 440 sounds close. TuneLit's semitone check from the audio hears the open low D and agrees with the tabs.

If you play on through the album, two songs need a change: Pin Me Down goes down to Drop C, and Undone sits higher, about 16 ¢ sharp. Clawfinger records are full of synths and programmed parts, so if a stray low note seems to contradict the tuning, trust your open D.

Tip: Only String 6 moves: lower it until it rings exactly an octave below the open String 4, and the riff falls under one finger.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to Drop D, every string +6 ¢, the notes Do What I Say was recorded in.
  2. From E Standard: String 6 down a whole step (E → D); the other strings stay.
  3. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Do What I Say sits 6 cents sharp on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much flat against it, which Tune already corrects.
  4. Then play Do What I Say along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
