About Lazy

Lazy, from Machine Head (1972), is a seven-minute blues that starts as an instrumental: Jon Lord's overdriven Hammond intro, then the main riff, then solos traded between organ and guitar before Ian Gillan sings, with harmonica, late in the song. Blackmore's riff is a swinging G blues in third position, the kind of line Guitar Player traced back to Clapton's Steppin' Out. The guitar is in E Standard, and most of the riff sits on String 4 and String 5.

The Machine Head CD sits about 6 ¢ sharp (A ≈ 441.6), and Lazy's Tune button follows it. On its own the song reads higher, about +14 ¢, but that reading has low confidence. So the album value stands; if the guitar still sounds a little low against the solos, try A ≈ 443.5, which matches the song's own reading.

The check from the audio leans towards F for String 6, as it does whenever the open low E is rarely played; the tabs and the band's whole catalogue say E Standard. Live versions, including the famous one on Made in Japan, stretch the song and sit at their own pitch, so learn the riff from the studio record if you want to play along with it.

Tip: Tune at the album's +6 ¢, then hold a G on String 5 against the riff; if it sounds flat, raise the reference to about A 443.5.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E Standard, every string +6 ¢, the notes Lazy was recorded in.
  2. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Lazy sits 6 cents sharp on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much flat against it, which Tune already corrects.
  3. Then play Lazy along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
