About Everlong

Everlong, from The Colour and the Shape (1997), is a Drop D song by Dave Grohl's own account: lower String 6 a whole step to D and leave the other five strings in E Standard. Grohl found the opening chord in that tuning between takes of Monkey Wrench, then wrote the whole song on an acoustic guitar in Drop D. The famous chord shape only works with that low D under it.

TuneLit measured the CD about 2 cents sharp and Everlong itself about 1 cent flat, both effectively A 440, so Tune opens Drop D at concert pitch with no offset to worry about. The audio check also hears D as the lowest open string.

Most of the album is in E Standard, My Hero included, so if you play the record in order, String 6 has to come down before track 11. On tour Chris Shiflett keeps a guitar in Drop D for this song and Monkey Wrench, an easy habit to copy if you own two guitars. Every main tab agrees on the tuning, so any of them will fit the record.

Tip: Drop String 6 to D and check it against open String 4, which should sound exactly one octave higher.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to Drop D, the notes Everlong was recorded in.
  2. From the album's E Standard: String 6 down a whole step (E → D); the other strings stay.
  3. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Everlong sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
  4. Then play Everlong along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.

Move the record into your tuning

Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move Everlong instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in Drop D. Choose Drop D at A 440 and Everlong moves down 2 cents, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
