About My Hero

My Hero, from The Colour and the Shape (1997), the first Foo Fighters album made by a full band, is in plain E Standard in every main tab. The album splits between E Standard and Drop D, and this song sits firmly on the standard side, with no retuned string and no capo.

TuneLit measured My Hero about 3 cents sharp, on a CD about 2 cents sharp: both count as concert pitch, so Tune opens E Standard at A 440, and a guitar set with any normal tuner matches the record. The audio check hears the open low E, which backs up the tabs.

A version of the tab written a half step down is around, but it is little used, and the record does not support it: the low string the audio check hears is a real E, not an E♭. On the same album Monkey Wrench, Hey, Johnny Park!, February Stars and Everlong drop String 6 to D, so a guitar left in Drop D from one of them will sound wrong here as soon as you touch the low string.

Tip: Use an E Standard tab, not the half-step-down one, and check that String 6 is back on E if you just played Everlong or Monkey Wrench.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E Standard, the notes My Hero was recorded in.
  2. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. My Hero sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
  3. Then play My Hero along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.

Move the record into your tuning

Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move My Hero instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in E Standard. Choose E Standard at A 440 and My Hero moves down 2 cents, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
