About Walk

Walk closes Wasting Light (2011), the album recorded on analog tape in Dave Grohl's garage with Butch Vig. The main tabs put it in plain E Standard, like every other song on the record.

TuneLit measured the CD about 2 cents sharp and Walk about 1 cent flat, so Tune opens E Standard at A 440. The analog tape did not move this record's pitch, and the audio check hears the open low E, which confirms the tuning.

If the heavy parts sound lower or bigger than your guitar can manage, don't reach for the tuning pegs. On Wasting Light the extra low end came from Pat Smear's baritone guitar, played on top of the standard-tuned ones, not from detuning. Play your part in E Standard and let the record supply the weight. Only one song on the album, A Matter of Time, sits apart in pitch, about 7 cents flat, and it has its own setting.

Tip: Stay in E Standard at A 440 even when the heavy sections sound lower than your guitar: that depth is Pat Smear's baritone, not a dropped tuning.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E Standard, the notes Walk was recorded in.
  2. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Walk sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
  3. Then play Walk along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.

Move the record into your tuning

Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move Walk instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in E Standard. Choose E Standard at A 440 and Walk moves down 2 cents, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
