About Angel
A ballad Hendrix carried for years. An early version, recorded with Mitch Mitchell at Olympic Studios in October 1967, bore the title Little Wing; the master was cut at Electric Lady Studios in New York in July 1970 with Mitchell and Billy Cox, and Mitchell added drum overdubs after Hendrix's death. It appears on First Rays of the New Rising Sun (1997). The most-viewed tab is in E♭ Standard, guitar and bass.
TuneLit measured the first 1997 CD. Angel reads about 6 ¢ sharp, next to the album's 7 ¢ (A ≈ 441.7), so it shares the album's setting: E♭ Standard 7 ¢ up. The audio check hears E♭ as the lowest open string.
A second community tab is written in E Standard; it uses the same shapes a half step above the record. The song shares its gentle chord-and-melody style with Little Wing, and the same E♭ tuning, but not the same pitch: Angel sits about 15 ¢ higher on record than Little Wing does on the Axis CD TuneLit measured. If you play the two back to back, retune the reference between them rather than trusting one setting.
Tip: Use the album's button (E♭ Standard, 7 ¢ up) and check the open low E♭ against the first chord of the intro.
Step by step
Tune your guitar like the record
- Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to E♭ Standard, every string +7 ¢, the notes Angel was recorded in.
- From E Standard: Every string down a half step. No tuner that knows E♭ Standard? Clamp a capo across fret 1, tune to E Standard as usual, then take it off: every string drops to E♭ Standard. Check each string again afterwards, since a capo pulls the strings a little sharp.
- Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Angel sits 7 cents sharp on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much flat against it, which Tune already corrects.
- Then play Angel along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.
Or the other way round
Move the record into your tuning
Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move Angel instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in E♭ Standard +7 ¢. Choose E Standard at A 440 and Angel moves up 93 cents, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
