About Got the Life

Got the Life, the first single from Follow the Leader (1998), is Korn at their most danceable: a bouncing groove with a disco feel under a heavy 7-string riff in A D G C F A D. Munky's Songsterr part works String 7 hard, the open A and frets 1, 4 and 6, and Fieldy's 5-string bass (A D G C F) plays its open A on almost half of its notes.

That open A is what you hear: in TuneLit's look at the record's low notes, the A in the guitar octave and the A an octave below make up more than half of everything. The CD sits about 4 ¢ sharp (A ≈ 441.1), and this song reads right at concert pitch, so Tune's A Standard +4 ¢ is within a few cents of it. The check from the audio agrees on the low A.

With guitar and bass hammering the same open string an octave apart, any mismatch in your low A sounds as a slow beating against the record. Bass players can match the whole song on a 5-string down a whole step; on a 4-string, tune to A D G C with heavy strings or the open-A groove loses its weight.

Tip: Tune to A Standard +4 ¢ and let the open A ring against the intro groove: if it beats slowly, nudge String 7.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to A Standard, every string +4 ¢, the notes Got the Life was recorded in.
  2. From B Standard: Every string down a whole step. No tuner that knows A Standard? Clamp a capo across fret 2, tune to B Standard as usual, then take it off: every string drops to A Standard. Check each string again afterwards, since a capo pulls the strings a little sharp.
  3. Turn String 7 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Got the Life sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
  4. Then play Got the Life along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 7 should ring together without a wobble.

Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move Got the Life instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in A Standard +4 ¢. Choose B Standard at A 440 and Got the Life moves up a half step and 96 cents, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
