About A.D.I.D.A.S.

A.D.I.D.A.S. was a single from Life Is Peachy (1996), a short, bouncing song with one of Korn's catchiest riffs. Like the rest of the album it is in the band's 7-string tuning, A D G C F A D. Munky's Songsterr part is unusual for Korn: two fifths of its notes sit high on String 2 and String 3, around A and G♯, many of them bent, while down on String 7 the open A swaps with the B♭ one fret above it.

TuneLit measured Life Is Peachy about 8 ¢ sharp (A ≈ 441.9), and A.D.I.D.A.S. reads close to that, about 10 ¢ high. The whole album is hard to measure, so take the offset as a guide rather than an exact value. TuneLit's check from the audio agrees that the lowest open string is the A.

Because the riff rubs a half step between the open string and the first fret, a guitar that is a few cents off makes that rub sound wider than it should. Get the open A right before you work on the bends, and use a light touch: on slack, detuned strings the bent notes go sharp quickly.

Tip: Tune to A Standard +8 ¢, then play the open A against the first fret of String 7 and listen for a clean half step.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to A Standard, every string +8 ¢, the notes A.D.I.D.A.S. was recorded in.
  2. From B Standard: Every string down a whole step. No tuner that knows A Standard? Clamp a capo across fret 2, tune to B Standard as usual, then take it off: every string drops to A Standard. Check each string again afterwards, since a capo pulls the strings a little sharp.
  3. Turn String 7 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. A.D.I.D.A.S. sits 8 cents sharp on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much flat against it, which Tune already corrects.
  4. Then play A.D.I.D.A.S. along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 7 should ring together without a wobble.
