About Falling Away from Me

Falling Away from Me was the lead single from Issues (1999), with a quiet, clean verse and a crushing chorus. The guitars use Korn's usual A D G C F A D. Head's clean part in the Songsterr tab stays on the top three strings, high and sparse, while his distorted part is mostly A and G♯ on String 2 and String 3, bent again and again, over the open low A.

Fieldy's bass carries the weight: in the tab almost two thirds of his notes are the open A of his 5-string (A D G C F), and on the record that low A0 is the strongest note TuneLit hears. The album sits within a few cents of A 440 (about 3 ¢ sharp), and the song reads about 9 ¢ high, not far enough from its album for its own setting, so Tune uses A Standard at A 440. TuneLit's audio check confirms the A as the lowest open string.

If the chorus sounds a hair flat against the record, that is the song's small extra offset; raise the reference a couple of cents by ear rather than retuning a string. The clean verse is the place to tune by ear, because nothing else covers those high notes.

Tip: Tune to A Standard at A 440, then check your top three strings against the clean verse before the chorus hits.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to A Standard, the notes Falling Away from Me was recorded in.
  2. From B Standard: Every string down a whole step. No tuner that knows A Standard? Clamp a capo across fret 2, tune to B Standard as usual, then take it off: every string drops to A Standard. Check each string again afterwards, since a capo pulls the strings a little sharp.
  3. Turn String 7 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Falling Away from Me sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
  4. Then play Falling Away from Me along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 7 should ring together without a wobble.
