About Rotting in Vain

Rotting in Vain was the first single from The Serenity of Suffering (2016), a heavy, driving song with Head back on second guitar. Head has said the album was first written on 8-strings before the band went back to 7-strings in their regular tuning, A D G C F A D, and every Songsterr tab of it uses that tuning. In the main part the open A is one of the two most common notes, with frets 1, 3, 5 and 7 of String 7 around it.

TuneLit measured the album at concert pitch, but Rotting in Vain reads about 8 ¢ flat (A ≈ 438), clearly enough below its neighbours to get a setting of its own: Tune opens A Standard −8 ¢. TuneLit's audio check hears the same low A that the tabs use.

Eight cents is small, but a guitar tuned to plain A 440 against this record beats audibly with the bass on every sustained low A. Insane, the song before it on the album, measures about 12 ¢ sharp, so if you play the two together you need to retune between them.

Tip: Tap Tune for A Standard −8 ¢ and check the open A of String 7 against the opening riff.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to A Standard, every string −8 ¢, the notes Rotting in Vain was recorded in.
  2. From B Standard: Every string down a whole step. No tuner that knows A Standard? Clamp a capo across fret 2, tune to B Standard as usual, then take it off: every string drops to A Standard. Check each string again afterwards, since a capo pulls the strings a little sharp.
  3. Turn String 7 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Rotting in Vain sits 8 cents flat on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much sharp against it, which Tune already corrects.
  4. Then play Rotting in Vain along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 7 should ring together without a wobble.
