About Here to Stay

Here to Stay opens Untouchables (2002) and won Korn a Grammy for Best Metal Performance. It is a riff song in the purest Korn sense: in Munky's Songsterr part more than two thirds of the notes are on String 7 of a 7-string tuned A D G C F A D, and more than a quarter are the open A alone, with frets 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 around it.

TuneLit measured most of Untouchables about 9 ¢ sharp (A ≈ 442.2), and Here to Stay reads a little higher still, about 14 ¢, though not clearly enough to get a setting of its own. Tune opens A Standard +9 ¢. The check from the audio agrees, firmly, that the lowest open string is the A.

Untouchables is the least even Korn album: a few songs sit about 8 ¢ flat and Alone I Break is half a step lower altogether. If you play the album straight through, Here to Stay's setting does not carry over to every track, so check each song's Tune button. On a 6-string, this is the hardest song to fake in D Standard, because the riff lives almost entirely on the low A.

Tip: Tune to A Standard +9 ¢ and spend a minute on String 7 alone: nearly the whole riff is played there.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to A Standard, every string +9 ¢, the notes Here to Stay was recorded in.
  2. From B Standard: Every string down a whole step. No tuner that knows A Standard? Clamp a capo across fret 2, tune to B Standard as usual, then take it off: every string drops to A Standard. Check each string again afterwards, since a capo pulls the strings a little sharp.
  3. Turn String 7 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Here to Stay sits 9 cents sharp on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much flat against it, which Tune already corrects.
  4. Then play Here to Stay along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 7 should ring together without a wobble.

Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in A Standard +9 ¢. Choose B Standard at A 440 and Here to Stay moves up a half step and 91 cents, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
