About Hurricane

Hurricane opens ...And the Circus Leaves Town (1995): two and a half minutes of fast riffing by Homme and John Garcia, an early version of which appeared on the Demon Cleaner single in 1994. It is in C Standard (C F B♭ E♭ G C), but the riff lives on A: in the Songsterr tab A is the commonest lowest note of the guitar, and Scott Reeder's bass plays a low A an octave below. On the record that low A is half of all the low notes TuneLit hears.

TuneLit measured this song apart from the rest of the album. The record sits about 8 ¢ sharp (A ≈ 442), but Hurricane reads at concert pitch, about 2 ¢ flat, so its own Tune button sets plain C Standard at A 440. If you play the album through, retune after this song.

The check from the audio cannot confirm the low string here, because the open C rarely sounds, but every tab agrees on C Standard. The riff's A can be fretted at the ninth fret of String 6 or the fourth of String 5, so check intonation up the neck once the open strings are in tune.

Tip: Use Hurricane's own button (A 440), then check the fretted A of the riff against Reeder's low A on the record.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to C Standard, the notes Hurricane was recorded in.
  2. From E Standard: Every string down 4 half steps. No tuner that knows C Standard? Clamp a capo across fret 4, tune to E Standard as usual, then take it off: every string drops to C Standard. Check each string again afterwards, since a capo pulls the strings a little sharp.
  3. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. Hurricane sits at concert pitch on the record, so the tuner stays at A 440.
  4. Then play Hurricane along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.

Move the record into your tuning

Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move Hurricane instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in C Standard. Choose E Standard at A 440 and Hurricane moves up 4 half steps and 2 cents, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
