About One Inch Man

One Inch Man was the only single from ...And the Circus Leaves Town (1995), written by John Garcia and Scott Reeder, with a video. Everything on the album is in C Standard (C F B♭ E♭ G C), and the Songsterr tab keeps Homme's guitar and Reeder's bass there. The song's centre is D rather than C: in the tab D is the commonest lowest note, both for the guitar and the bass, and the open low string is hardly used.

TuneLit measured the album about 8 ¢ sharp (A ≈ 442), and One Inch Man reads about 10 ¢ sharp, close enough to use the album's Tune button, C Standard +8 ¢. On the record D is one of the commonest low notes, as the tab predicts.

Since the riff sits on fretted notes, small tuning errors show up as sour intervals rather than a wrong root. Tune all six strings carefully, not only String 6, and check the riff's D against the record. A tab in E Standard with the same frets sounds two whole steps higher; tune down to play along.

Tip: After tuning, play the D the riff starts from and compare it with the record before you play the rest.

Step by step

Tune your guitar like the record

  1. Tap Tune like this: the tuner switches to C Standard, every string +8 ¢, the notes One Inch Man was recorded in.
  2. From E Standard: Every string down 4 half steps. No tuner that knows C Standard? Clamp a capo across fret 4, tune to E Standard as usual, then take it off: every string drops to C Standard. Check each string again afterwards, since a capo pulls the strings a little sharp.
  3. Turn String 6 to String 1 until each shows ✓ in tune. One Inch Man sits 8 cents sharp on the record: at A 440 your guitar would sound that much flat against it, which Tune already corrects.
  4. Then play One Inch Man along with the record: its lowest open note and your String 6 should ring together without a wobble.

Move the record into your tuning

Rather keep your guitar as it is? Let Play along move One Inch Man instead. Add your own copy, for example from your CD (it never leaves your device); the link already says the song is in C Standard +8 ¢. Choose E Standard at A 440 and One Inch Man moves up 3 half steps and 92 cents, at its own speed. Slow it down or loop a few bars to learn it, and save the result as a WAV file.
